About the Performance

As the Scottish nobleman Macbeth and his friend Banquo ride home from a victorious battle, they encounter three wild witches on a lonely heath.

They prophesize a great future for Macbeth: one day he will become king! The two friends ride on in disbelief. But unexpected news awaits them back home at Cawdor Castle: King Duncan has announced his visit and will also be spending the night at Cawdor Raste! Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth, now senses the fulfillment of the witches' prophecy: what if Macbeth were to murder the sleeping king? Then Macbeth himself would be king. And so it happens - but the terrible deed brings nightmares and remorse in its wake. Macbeth and his lady can no longer stop their game to retain power - and finally Macbeth has the whole of Scotland against him..

Giuseppe Verdi has adapted William Shakespeare's famous drama about the tragic Scottish King Macbeth and his wife, the power-hungry Lady Macbeth, into a gripping operatic thriller. The animated short version contains the musical highlights of the original version and tells Shakespeare's dark story in an exciting and easy-to-understand way in German.

This abridged version of Verdi's early work contains many of the famous musical numbers from Macbeth: such as the Lady's epistolary aria, the ghostly apparition of the murdered Banquo and the great battle music of the all-decisive battle for Cawdor Castle.

The Vienna State Opera has a great Verdi tradition. In the 1950s, his operas were also performed in German, as is this animated short version.
