What to Expect

Cinderella lives with her two selfish stepsisters in her stepfather's house and is treated like a maid by everyone.

When a strange beggar knocks on the door, the wicked sisters heartlessly chase him away. Only Cinderella secretly slips him a loaf of bread. What nobody knows is that the beggar is Dandini, Prince Ramiro's servant. In disguise, he wants to scout out the daughters of the country for his master to see if there is a lovely bride for the prince.
When the invitation to the prince's ball flutters into the house, at which he wants to choose his bride, the excitement is great. But Cinderella is not allowed to attend the ball, despite her pleas. Then Dandini appears again and gives her a beautiful ball gown. Unrecognized, she dances all night in the prince's castle and the prince only has eyes for the unknown beauty. The sisters are bursting with jealousy. The prince proposes to Cinderella, but she only says "yes" on one condition: the prince must visit her at home and then choose her. She then flees.
The following day, Dandini and the prince set off on a search through the whole country. During a thunderstorm, they stop at the house of the three sisters. Prince Ramiro recognizes Cinderella as his unknown beauty and the two fall into each other's arms.

This edition is about Gioacchino Rossini's opera La cenerentola , based on the famous fairy tale about the kind-hearted Cinderella who stands up to her richer, superficial and selfish stepsisters and finds love. This animated short version contains many of the musical highlights of the original version and tells the story in an exciting and easy-to-understand way in German.

Rossini's cheerful and fast-paced music delights with its tempo, wit and folksong-like beauty.

The Vienna State Opera has a great Rossini tradition. In the 1950s, his operas were also performed in German, as is this animated short version.
