About the Performance

»Gaye Su Akyol gilt als eine der spannendsten jungen Stimmen aus der Türkei. In ihrer Musik finden sich psychedelische Surfgitarren ebenso wie nahöstliche Streicherklänge.«

Duration ca. 90 min, no intermission

Consistent Fantasy is Reality is the first music theater production by Turkish singer and activist Gaye Su Akyol. She is guided by the aspiration to use her creative work to counter oppression and injustice with a powerful poetic counter-reality and to show possibilities for a fairer and more beautiful world.

Post-punk, grunge and psychedelic surf rock meet Turkish classical and Anatolian folk music in the style of Gaye Su Akyol.

"My parents listened to Turkish folk music and classical music, as a child I liked all these things. When I was nine or ten, I discovered Nirvana through my older brother
Nirvana through my older brother, which blew me away. Later came Anatolian rock music,
Sonic Youth, Nick Cave and so on. All these different things come together in my music."
- Gaye Su Akyol

For the world premiere of Consistent Fantasy is Reality, the artist is expanding her sound spectrum and working with classically trained orchestral musicians. The pop-feminist aesthetic does not shy away from glitter, flashy colors and glamour, but consciously uses them and takes them seriously as artistic means.
